artist statement
"I am a half-feral, visual memoirist and earth mystic with a gift for offending people unintentionally. I believe art is a sacred practice of presence that is forged through the audacity to believe that our lived experience is worthy of witness.
My work navigates themes of belonging, self-mythology, reclamation, and intimacy with the natural world. Through my photography I aim to draw the viewer back to nature. Employing a mythic lens, I strive to evoke a sense of reverence, a challenge to the audience to consider their own self-story in relation to the land they live on."
and so i howled
Sasha Casta’s visual memoir detailing the forging of a new mythos from the ashes of her unconventional upbringing. The project explore the process of shedding the masculine christian sky cult narrative in favor of a feminine chthonic spirituality as Casta embraces her humble origins of poverty and identifies with her mother. Casta highlights themes of ferality, expression, the cyclical nature of death and rebirth, religion, motherhood, and self-reclamation while referencing biblical passages and the legend of La Loba to position herself as both prophet and shaman in her own story.
